I’ve known Germaine Tarver for the better part of a decade, as a colleague in supervision of a large group of teachers as well as a presenter to middle school students. In that time, I have seen her work with teachers to develop the practices that help move students forward.

A strong understanding of data collection allows Ms. Tarver the ability to demonstrate the levels of success that staff have following the implementation of new practices. Teachers leave sessions with her with 2 things: a toolbox with new techniques and strategies they can implement right away and the confidence to bring these new techniques and strategies to their classrooms.

Ms. Tarver has the unique ability to bring a high level of discourse to her professional work while maintaining a friendly, accessible tone good for the newest members of your staff or the most experienced veteran teachers.

A great literacy educator has a solid understanding of balanced literacy and the ability to engage students in the learning process. Germaine Tarver possesses both in equal measure.

I had the privilege of working with Germaine in my capacity as principal of Hillside’s middle school. During my tenure there Germaine’s rapport with students, staff, and families was strong and her teaching had an enormous impact on student growth. Germaine was able to improve literacy for all her students, especially those below grade level.

During her time with us, her students made considerable literacy gains. Germaine Tarver is an advocate for all children and it was an absolute pleasure working with her.

I met Mrs. Tarver when my son was assigned to her in the 6th grade at Walter O. Krumbiegel Middle School. My son at the time was in a "Title I" class where he needed extra help in English. Well...what a blessing it was that Mrs. Tarver was his teacher.

Mrs. Tarver never gave up on my son when he struggled with writing & comprehension. I remember she would spend extra time with him after school helping him to better his writing skills. My son had needed extra help for sometime. With Mrs. Tarver’s gentle creative style of teaching it was then he began to excel in English.

Now my son is a Junior in high school and he continues to excel. It is because of Mrs. Tarver’s compassionate and personal way of teaching that helped him.

Five years ago, my son, Justin entered Mrs. Tarver’s classroom as a 6th grade language arts student, received tutoring, and eventually became a member of Mrs. Tarver’s book club. Today, Justin is preparing to enter the 11th grade in High School, and continues to do well in English Honors classes. Justin speaks as highly and affectionately of Mrs. Tarver, as he did when he first entered her classroom. She will forever share a special place in his heart as one of his all time favorite teachers. A sentiment we both share.

Mrs. Tarver’s passion for teaching and enthusiasm for learning is contagious. Her care, concern and patience that she shares with students provides a ’safe space’ that encourage and celebrate efforts (both failures and successes). The confidence Mrs. Tarver has in their ability to learn is demonstrated through her expectation that they do their best. Mrs. Tarver’s unique ability to incorporate student’s personal interests in the learning process, through techniques and strategies that fit individual needs, is something my son will carry with him always.

Justin continues to do well in his studies overall, and specially looks forward to the challenge of English Honors classes, which he has taken over the years.
